Hybrid power plant of Rajasthan supplies green power to Mumbai

MUMBAI: Tata Power Green Energy's 225 MW hybrid power project in Rajasthan has begun supplying green power to Mumbai from Wednesday.

With this, the utility firm's non-carbon power supply to Mumbai consumers will rise to 38% this financial year and it will meet its Renewable Purchase Obligations, said an official. The power firm has over seven lakh consumers in the city.

This is the first hybrid project which was developed by Tata Power consisting of a recently commissioned solar power plant at Noorsar in Rajasthan and existing wind assets of 96MW which is expected to generate about 700 MUs of energy per year. "The plant will annually offset approximately 700 million Kg of CO2," he said.

On the other hand, Adani Electricity has set one of the most ambitious targets among utilities -- to power Mumbai with 60% renewable energy through solar and wind. It caters to over 29 lakh consumers in the suburbs. The company will achieve 30% of its target by 2023, a senior official said on Wednesday.

"It will also provide tariff stability for consumers as the price of renewable energy is cheaper than those procured from fossil fuels," an official added.

Said Tata Power managing director Praveer Sinha, "We are excited that our first hybrid of 225MW in Rajasthan will supply power to our Mumbai discom. Our objective is to make maximum use of non- carbon energy to meet the clean and green energy goals of the country." With the commissioning of this hybrid project, the total renewables capacity of Tata Power reaches 5,524 MW with an installed capacity of 3,859 MW and 1,665 MW under various stages of implementation.
