Hybrid car fire creates extra challenge as Dublin firefighters battle blaze in Swords

A hybrid car created an added challenge when it went on fire in Swords on Monday.

The scary photo shared by Dublin Fire Brigade shows the vehicle destroyed from the flames, with damage to the ground around it.

DFB said it took two tonnes of water to stop the blaze.

They shared the incident online, saying how new technology can bring new challenges for firefighters.

When asked about the amount of water it usually takes to deal with a car fire, DFB said: "There is a bit of 'it depends', but you'd be looking at about a tonne (1000 Litres)"

Information for first responders produced by Tesla have warned that a battery fire in an electric vehicle can take 3,000 gallons (roughly 13 tonnes) of water and up to 24 hours to fully suppress.

Dublin City Council told Dublin Live: "With regard to how much water would it usually take to extinguish a regular car fire, this would be difficult to ascertain as each fire is unique.

"The Gardai are currently investigating."
