Huw Edwards ‘planning comeback’ after Channel 5 drama as publicist appears on GMB

Huw Edwards has enlisted a publicist and is reportedly planning a comeback following the Channel 5 drama about his fall from grace.

Edwards, who at the height of his fame was Britain's highest paid news anchor, pleaded guilty in 2024 to receiving and making indecent images of children in 2024. He was given a suspended sentence.

This week, the story of the presenter grooming a 17-year-old was dramatised in Power: The Downfall Of Huw Edwards, a Channel 5 drama starring Martin Clunes as the disgraced presenter.

Edwards put out a statement condemning the drama hours before its release, in which he shared that he planned to produce his “own account of these terrible events”

A further report by The Daily Telegraph has now claimed that Edwards is allegedly planning to use the drama to stage his return to the public eye with a documentary about the experience – in which he will allegedly claim that mental illness "played a crucial role in his behaviour".

In order to prepare for his reported return to show business, Edwards is working with publicist Barry Tomes, who is working for the presenter on a volunteer basis.

Tomes, who has previously worked with The Beach Boys, Tony Christie and Alvin Stardust appeared on Good Morning Britain on Wednesday (25 March) morning, when he claimed that Edwards had already been planning his comeback until the Channel 5 drama “triggered” him to respond earlier.

“He said about six months ago, because I first spoke to him nine months ago, he definitely wants to tell his side of the story,” Tomes said. "That's fair enough. Everybody is allowed to say their piece.”

On GMB, Tomes clashed with Susanna Reid as he suggested that he'd taken on the job to “find out why this happened”.

“He's not the first famous man to have these issues, and there'll be more unless we can figure out why,” said Tomes.

"I don't understand what you're getting at? We know what happened," Reid said, with Tomes interjecting: “No, why it happened. We all know what happened.

“So what are you looking for?” asked Reid. “Have you sort of self-appointed yourself as an investigator?” To which Tomes responded: “Yes. I probably have, actually. That's probably a fair way of putting it.”

Ed Balls then asked him why he’s chosen to “help and support” a convicted paedophile, and asked whether he would publicise stories that Edwards didn't want told.

“I'm going to tell the truth, yeah. 100 percent, and he's aware of that,” Tomes said. “If he does have the conversation he wants to have, it will be full and complete or I won't be involved in it.”

Speaking to The Telegraph about a potential Edwards project, Tomes said: “If it were up to me, it would be a filmed documentary. It’s for Edwards to decide how he wants to do it.

“I’m 75 per cent certain he will do this because he’s adamant he needs to have his say. I think he wants to say it all, not just the juicy bits. He’ll speak from the heart. I don’t believe he should keep apologising, because it weakens it. I’m a great believer in ‘you don’t say you’re sorry, you show it’.

“I don’t want him to be on TV other than maybe an interview. He doesn’t want to be on Celebrity Big Brother, I’m A Celebrity or [involved with] anything that the papers are saying.”
