Hutchins School student charged over 'serious assault'

The principal has asked the school community not to engage in speculation about the investigation.

EDITOR'S NOTE: (12/12/18) In November 2018 the Office of Tasmania's Director of Public Prosecutions decided to discontinue any prosecution of the Hutchins School student.

A student from an elite private school in Hobart has been charged over a serious assault.

In a letter to parents, Headmaster of The Hutchins School Dr Rob McEwan, said allegations of a "serious nature" had been made against a student currently enrolled at the school.

Dr McEwan said once the school was informed of the allegations they were immediately referred to police.

"The matter is presently the subject of a police investigation and is subject to the Youth Justice Act," said Mr McEwan.

"This means we are required by law not to make further comment."

Mr McEwan has asked members of the school community to "avoid engaging in any form of speculation" at this time.

"This will be both harmful to those involved and may compromise investigation," he said.

"We are fully co-operating with Tasmania Police.

"All steps have been taken under the School's policies and procedures to deal with the matter."

Mr McEwan said the wellbeing of all students at The Hutchins School was the number one priority.

The Hutchins School said it would not be commenting further.

A police spokeswoman confirmed a child had been charged in relation to a serious assault.

"Police received a complaint in relation to the matter in late October," she said.

"The child will be dealt with under the Youth Justice Act."

Police said the investigation into the matter was ongoing.

Neither the school nor the police would reveal the age of the charged student or where the alleged assault happened.

The Hutchins School is an Anglican day and boarding school for boys from pre-kindergarten to Year 12.

Assault investigation ongoing at Friends' School

Earlier this week it was revealed The Friends' School in Hobart is also under investigation after a claim of historical sexual abuse.

In a letter, parents were informed allegations had been made by a former student against a senior staff member who worked at the Quaker-led institution decades ago.

Police said the matter would be assessed by Hobart CIB.

The Friends' School has confirmed it also has an ongoing independent investigation into whether one of its current senior secondary teachers may have breached the school's Code of Conduct.

The senior secondary teacher was suspended earlier this year on full pay.

"It is the school's understanding that the matter being investigated does not involve any other current staff, students or families," said a school spokesman.
