Hustler plays it coy

Larry Flynt - pornography magnate, Kucinich presidential fundraiser and first-amendment advocate - has quite a knack for exposing the sexual misdeeds of southern Republicans. Before he got one New Orleans prostitute talking this summer about her liaisons with senator David Vitter, Flynt's chief investigator knocked Louisiana's Bob Livingston from the House's upper echelons with revelations of infidelity.

And now Flynt's dropping a hint that makes Washingtonians wince - he claims to have dug up dirt on Trent Lott that prompted the Mississippian's early resignation this week. Read on...

Referencing a post on the online gay newsletter PageOneQ, Flynt gave a coquettish but interesting response:

HUSTLER Magazine has received numerous inquiries regarding the involvement of Larry Flynt and HUSTLER in the resignation of Trent Lott. Senator Lott has been the target of an ongoing HUSTLER investigation for some time now, due to confidential information that we have received.

Max Follmer over at the Huffington Post cast doubt on the PageOneQ item's source early this morning, but his piece makes no mention of involvement by Flynt or Hustler. Lott did notably refrain from joining fellow Republican leaders as they froze out Idaho senator Larry Craig following his wide-stance brouhaha, but Congress watchers chalked that up to a long-standing friendship between Lott and Craig.
