Husqvarna is a brand unlike any other in the world of motorcycles.
And this Svartpilen 701 is unlike any other bike on the road.
For a start, despite the number in its name, it actually employs a 693cc motor.
No matter though, as it’s actually the most powerful single-cylinder engine on the market, kicking out an impressive 75 horses at 8,500rpm.
Looks wise, this bike is a cross between a flat-tracker, a cafe racer, a scrambler, a supermoto, a streetfighter – basically, there’s a bit of everything in there.
Svartpilen means “black arrow” and the design is all blacked-out, matt finish, clean lines and minimalist.

Jump on board and that rather flat, firm-looking seat is actually more comfortable than it appears.
There’s plenty of leg room and the ride position is upright, natural and comfortable, with the bars sweeping up and back towards you.
The cockpit is a pretty basic affair with a single round clock, but it has all the information you require, including gear selected and fuel gauge, with buttons located on the face itself.
That leaves the switchgear on the bars nice and uncluttered.

Head off and you’re immediately struck by how light and nimble the 701 feels – not surprising, at just 158kg dry weight.
At low speeds and around town, it’s a joy, nippy, precise and surprisingly smooth for a big single, with the quickshifter and autoblipper making for super slick gear changes.
But take the bike out on to some twisty A or B roads and the Svartpilen really comes into its own.
It’s based on the KTM 690 and, as such, employs WP adjustable USD forks, with 150mm of travel, and a WP adjustable rear shock.
Though the bends it’s sharp, accurate and reliable, with the Pirelli rubber surprisingly grippy for semi-knobblies – throw it into a corner and it hugs the tarmac till you blast out the other side.
That single cylinder pumps out oodles of power and torque.

Despite having only a single 320mm front disc and 240mm rear, the braking is superb, with Brembo four piston calipers providing beautiful feel and sensitivity, and also awesome power when needed.
The ABS does its stuff only if you pull up very sharpish and the traction control is unobtrusive and can be switched off anyway, if you prefer.
I love this Husky. At over £9,000, it’s maybe a little pricey, but it’s quirky looking, well put together, has some great features and is simply a lot of fun to ride.
