A loving husband is taking on the Herculean task of running 27 marathons in 27 days to raise money for research into his wife’s rare illness.
Captain Scott Fisher, 31, from Kent, hopes to raise £27,000 for the charity that has offered support to his wife Megan, 26, who is suffering with Mast Cell Activation Syndrome (MCAS).
Megan was struck down with the disease in 2018 following the birth of her child.
From being a fit equestrian who competed at the national level and an Army Reserve, Megan became incapacitated and bed-bound.
Throughout the following three years and several occasions when she was close to death, no-one was able satisfactorily to diagnose her illness, despite multiple spells in hospital.
Resorting to their own research, Megan and her husband Scott began to suspect that underlying all the various conditions might be MCAS.
Luckily a sympathetic GP and referrals to two specialist hospitals in London finally confirmed this is almost certainly the case.
To manage her condition, Megan now takes 27 pills a day, counted out by Scott.
He said: “I started researching challenges and the first one I stumbled across was Eddie Izzard’s 27 marathons for Sports Relief.
“The parallels with Megan’s 27 pills a day leaped out to me – I thought it could be a great way to help draw attention to the little- known disease.”
Scott is running the 27 consecutive marathons over Christmas from December 11 to the January 6.
