Husband threw wife into wall at Bongo's Bingo as they celebrated wedding anniversary

A husband threw his wife into a wall at Bongo's Bingo as the couple celebrated their wedding anniversary.

Stephen Duke, 37, dragged his wife, Sarah Duke, and grabbed her by the throat during the much-loved Liverpool night at Camp and Furnace on September 19 last year.

Duke, of Countess Park, West Derby, appeared at Liverpool Magistrates' Court today charged with assault occasioning actual bodily harm.

Chris Fontaine, prosecuting, told the court that Ms Duke was talking to an unknown man during the night when her husband's friends "pulled her away".

Mr Fontaine said: "The defendant grabbed her by the throat and pushed her backwards towards the fire exit."

CCTV footage captured the assault, which saw Duke drag her, lifting her off her feet and throwing her into a wall and pushing her face-first into a fence.

Ms Duke believes she may have lost consciousness as some events became unclear.

She suffered a broken nose as well as a cut lip and a grazed and bruised jawline.

Mr Fontaine told the court that Duke has seven previous convictions for seven offences, two of which took place against a person.

In March this year he was convicted of assault occasioning actual bodily harm, for which he was handed a community order which runs until March 2021.

Duke admitted the offences on a basis of plea, saying he did not accept punching his wife but did admit the assault.

Nick Woozy, defending, explained that the defendant said he "acted recklessly" a statement the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) did not accept.

To the statement District Judge Rhys Williams said: "How can one recklessly grab someone by the throat and push them through fire doors resulting in potential loss of consciousness?"

Following out of court discussions Mr Fontaine accepted that there was no punch and the court heard Duke admitted causing the injuries, but said he didn't cause them intentionally.

Deputy District Judge Rhys Williams sent the case to the crown court for sentencing, ruling that sentencing powers above that of a Magistrates' Court may be required.

Duke will next appear at Liverpool Crown Court on September 23 to be sentenced and was released on unconditional bail until that date.
