Alan Carter is facing a double heartbreak no one should have to endure. Not only is he grieving the brutal murder of his wife, Karen, but he’s also come to terms with a devastating discovery—she’d been having an affair.
Karen, 65, was found with fatal stab wounds outside her holiday home in the quiet village of Trémolat in the Dordogne region of France. But what makes the tragedy even more painful is that the person who discovered her bleeding out was the very man she’d been romantically involved with—Jean-François Guerrier, a 74-year-old retired businessman, reported the Express.
They’d spent the evening at a wine-tasting event with friends, and just hours later, Jean-François found Karen in the driveway. As the police launched a murder investigation, the truth about Karen’s secret relationship began to surface.
Her husband Alan, also 65, told The Times that the revelation felt like a deep betrayal: “What has come out of this investigation has confirmed a relationship I did not want to believe, and that had been denied to me repeatedly by [my] wife.”
Karen and Jean-François weren’t just occasional acquaintances—they ran a local café and bar together, Cafe Village. Alan now believes the time they spent together allowed Jean-François to develop a strong emotional hold over Karen. He said: “It was so obvious that Jean-François had an affection for Karen, and I feel he took advantage of the time we were spending apart.”
He recalled begging Karen to be honest with him about the rumours spreading around the village. “I told her that the gossip was tarnishing her reputation, but she batted it away and said there was nothing in it. She told our friends the same.”
Alan shared that the café attracted what he described as a “lonely bunch of people,” and he worried about the influence they had on his wife. “She really did not know that much about them,” he said.
The couple also had a home in South Africa, but due to concerns about crime, had decided not to settle there. Alan never imagined their dream of a peaceful life abroad would end in such horror. “I could not have imagined the reality would be that Karen got caught up in what is being talked about as some sort of love triangle that resulted in her being murdered in France.”
Police are still investigating, focusing on whether jealousy may have been the motive. Jean-François was questioned but later released, as there’s currently no evidence linking him directly to the crime. Meanwhile, officers continue searching the nearby woods for clues and the murder weapon, hoping to bring answers to a family left shattered.
