Husband of Maldives diving victim said she was ‘among the best divers on earth’

  • Five Italian divers, including marine biologist and TV personality Monica Montefalcone and her daughter Giorgia Sommacal, died during an underwater cave expedition in the Maldives on Thursday.
  • The group was exploring caves at a depth of 50-60 metres in Vaavu Atoll, about 64km from Malé, and were reported missing after failing to resurface from an area known for strong currents and complex underwater tunnels.
  • Carlo Sommacal, Monica's husband and Giorgia's father, expressed his devastation, saying his wife was “among the best divers on earth” and speculated that “something must have happened down there” given her extensive experience.
  • Maldivian rescue teams, including the coast guard and military units, launched a “high-risk” search and recovery operation near Alimatha, recovering one body while the remaining four are believed to still be within the submerged cave system, with efforts hampered by rough weather conditions.
  • A Maldives government spokesperson confirmed that an investigation would be launched into how the divers went below the permitted depth in the extremely deep cave, which even specialist divers typically do not attempt to approach.
