Western Sydney man charged with murder after wife's 'shocking' death at their home

A father of three children has been charged with the murder of his wife inside their Western Sydney home.

Emergency services were called to a block of units at Fairfield about midday after a neighbour called triple-0.

When police and paramedics arrived at Nelson Street they found Samar Shlemoon struggling to breathe on the kitchen floor.

ABC understands it will be alleged she was stabbed multiple times during what police said was an act of domestic violence.

Her husband, Salam Al-Qas Soomo, 60, was arrested and taken to Fairfield Police Station for questioning by detectives.

Relatives told the ABC the couple moved to Australia from Syria as refugees only a few months before the pandemic began.

The ABC understands the couple have three children who were at school at the time of the alleged murder.

Nelson Street was filled with ambulances and riot police before it was cordoned off as a crime scene.

Neighbours consoled each other after hearing news of the incident this afternoon.

"It's just very shocking … I can't believe this happened in our suburb," nearby resident Veronique Duval said.

"We don't know what's happened … [but] I wish there was more protection for women around."

Another neighbour, Anita Joseph, said she was "disgusted" to hear about the woman's death.

"It's devastating, I'm shaking to be honest … because you're getting scared to walk in your own community," she said.

Superintendent Brett McFadden said domestic violence sadly remained in the community.

"It's a tragic set of circumstances … It's the ultimate price a woman has paid in the course of her relationship," he said.

Forensic officers are assisting homicide detectives as they work to determine the circumstances surrounding the death.

Mr Al-Qas Soomo didn’t appear in Fairfield Local Court today and didn’t apply for bail.

His matter has been adjourned to January next year.
