A married man spent a night in the cells after a passer-by reported him rowing with his wife.

Wayne Cresswell was arrested on July 17 after someone overheard shouting as they passed by his home in Windsor Street, Wallsend.

North Tyneside Magistrates' Court was told that when officers arrived Cresswell, 56, said it was "f***ing ridiculous" before becoming abusive.

Rebecca Gibson, prosecuting, added: "He was abusive towards officers and was removed."

The court was told that the couple had a "verbal only" row and had been together for 17 years.

John Brown, defending, said the row was only heard because of the weather.

He added: "They left the window open due to the hot weather

"Mr Cresswell's mistake was to not keep quiet when the police arrived."

On Thursday morning he appeared in court wearing the same England shirt he had been arrested in.

The defendant, who the court heard had never been in trouble before, admitted breach of the peace and was issued with a £50 fine.
