Husband died after getting into difficulty while swimming in the sea on holiday in Morocco

A man died after getting into difficulty while swimming in the sea on holiday, an inquest has heard.

Stephen Thomas Aneurin Hughes, of Colwyn Avenue in the Winch Wen area of Swansea, had travelled to Morocco with his wife for a two-week holiday in October 2017.

On October 8, three days into the couple's holiday in Agadir, while at the beach Mr Hughes asked his wife if she wanted to go for a swim in the sea to which she replied that she would join him later. The 61-year-old entered the sea but got into difficulty and had to be helped onto the beach.

The inquest, held at Swansea Civic Centre on Thursday, heard Mr Hughes was unconscious when he was pulled from the sea and he received CPR which resulted in him "coughing up water" and managing to breathe "unaided".

Emergency services were called to the beach and the retired factory worker and dad-of-two was being transferred to a local hospital when he died.

An initial post-mortem examination carried out in Morocco listed Mr Hughes' cause of death as drowning. However a second examination took place at Morriston Hospital, in Swansea, and found that he suffered with coronary artery disease.

A toxicology report found there was no alcohol in Mr Hughes' system and only prescribed drugs were detected. The inquest heard Mr Hughes was "happy and enjoying his holiday" with his wife and had been "in good spirits" earlier that day.

Recording a narrative conclusion, acting senior coroner for Swansea and Neath Port Talbot Colin Phillips said: "Mr Hughes went swimming in the sea on holiday in Morocco and unfortunately died.

"The exact circumstances of what happened in the water are unknown.

"There was significant natural disease present in the cardiovascular system which may have accounted for a sudden cardiac arrest due to exertion while in the water."
