Husband and wife stole more than £100,000 from community football club

A husband and wife stole more than £100,000 from the community football club they ran.

Simon and Michelle Marshall will be sentenced next monthafter admitting fraudulently taking money out of Phoenix Football Youth Club in Southport.

Earlier this year, Michelle, 42, pleaded guilty to two charges in relation to her role in the the theft including a count of fraud in which she transferred £70,185.60 of a grant awarded to the club from its account to spend on herself.

On that charge, she admitted fraud between January 8, 2017 and November 8, 2019, LancsLive reports.

On the second charge, Michelle and Simon, 47, were both accused of fraudulently taking £41,619.41 from the club, which Michelle Marshall admitted and Simon Marshall denied.

That meant he was due to stand trial in January, while her sentencing was delayed pending the outcome of those proceedings.

However, Simon Marshall returned to Liverpool Crown Court last week and pleaded guilty two alternative counts of 'theft including by finding'.

The pair, of Shaws Road, Birkdale, will learn their fate on January 13.

The football club has since been renamed, relocated and taken over by new people and regularly publishes its financial details.
