Husband accepts killing his wife in their Liverpool home

A husband accused of murdering his wife has accepted responsibility for killing her in their Liverpool home.

But Mohammad Ureza Azizi is yet to enter any formal plea over the death of Malak aka Katy Adabzadeh.

Psychiatrists must now evaluate whether he is fit to enter a plea and whether he may have a partial defence to murder.

Emergency services were called to a flat in The Green in Stoneycroft, at around 4.55pm, on Thursday, November 25 last year.

Once officers and paramedics arrived at the scene they found the body of the 47-year-old victim.

A post-mortem examination found the mum, an Iranian woman, died as a result of "head trauma".

Azizi, 57, of The Green, Stoneycroft, was later arrested and charged with her murder.

He appeared in the dock at Liverpool Crown Court this afternoon assisted by an Iranian interpreter.

Azizi, balding with dark hair and wearing a grey sweatshirt, spoke only to confirm his personal details.

David McLachlan, QC, prosecuting, said a murder trial had been fixed for April 4 this year.

He said it had been estimated to last three weeks, but now would only last two, as a result of information provided by defence lawyers.

Daniel Prowse, defending, told the court: "The unlawful killing of the victim is accepted in this case."

He added: "The only issues now which arise are partial defence to murder, which there may be in this case."

Mr Prowse said solicitors had instructed a psychiatrist, Dr Lucy Bacon, to evaluate his client.

He said in light of "the admitting of killing" he wouldn't ask for his client to be arraigned today.

Judge Andrew Menary, QC, said: "I'm grateful for the indication of the acceptance of killing in the sense of doing the act."

He told Azizi: "The likelihood is in the next week or two you will be produced at court for a conference with your legal team and more particularly for a meeting with a psychiatrist instructed by your solicitors."

The judge remanded Azizi in custody until that date.

In a touching tribute to Ms Adabzadeh released shortly after her death, her family said: "Katy was a loving mother, lovely sister, wife and daughter.

"She was generous, kind and would always help anyone. Katy will be missed terribly.

"As a family we ask for the community's support at this time to find out what has happened to our beloved Katy."
