The Carolina Hurricanes have signed defenseman Trevor van Riemsdyk to a two-year, $4.6 million contract, the team announced Thursday.
The deal will pay van Riemsdyk $2.1 million in the 2018-19 season and $2.5 million in the 2019-20 season.
"Trevor was a steady presence on our blue line last season," Canes general manager Don Waddell said in a statement. "He's shown progression each year of his NHL career and is a well-liked player in our locker room."
Van Riemsdyk, 26, was acquired by Carolina in a trade with the Vegas Golden Knights last June and became a restricted free agent after the 2017-18 season. He filed for salary arbitration on Thursday before the 5 p.m. deadline, but the deal was later announced.
Van Riemsdyk's plus-9 rating led the Canes' defensemen in plus/minus last season and he was second among the D-men with 113 blocked shots. He set a career high with 13 assists and tied his career high with 16 points.
A former college teammate of Canes defensemen Brett Pesce at New Hampshire, van Riemsdyk was a member of the Chicago Blackhawks' 2015 Stanley Cup champions. He was selected by the Golden Knights in the 2017 expansion draft, then traded to Carolina.
