NEW YORK _ The Islanders got a point with a third-period rally, but dropped a 5-4 overtime decision to the Hurricanes on Ron Hainsey's goal at 2:52 of the extra period.
The Islanders had a power play to start overtime but could not convert against Carolina's league-best penalty kill. John Tavares broke his stick on a faceoff and the Hurricanes worked the puck around to Hainsey, who scored his second of the night past J-F Berube.
As they did a night earlier in Detroit, the Islanders entered the third period down 4-3. And, like Friday, the Isles tied it, this time on Josh Bailey's power-play blast at 8:33 of the third. Unlike Friday, the Isles made it to overtime to earn a point.
Berube was shaky in the second period, allowing three goals, including one by Teuvo Teravainen with 1.1 seconds left in the period to restore the Hurricanes' lead. Brock Nelson had tied it at 19:00.
Casey Cizikas gave the Isles a brief 2-1 lead early in the second with his fifth of the season and Anders Lee scored in the first.
