WINNIPEG, Manitoba _ It certainly wasn't the start the Carolina Hurricanes wanted.
In a nightmarish finish to their season opener, the Canes lost a 4-1 lead in the third period, then lost in overtime 5-4.
Mark Scheifle's goal with 2:19 left in overtime was the winner at MTS Centre.
The Canes led 4-1 in the third period after Victor Rask scored on the power play. But a short-handed goal by Blake Wheeler energized the Jets, who surged to tie the score 4-4.
Patrik Laine, the second overall pick of the 2016 NHL draft, scored on the power play, then assisted as Mathieu Perreault scored with 1:29 left in regulation.
Jeff Skinner, who scored the Canes' first goal of the season, and Lee Stempniak each had a goal and assist, and Jordan Staal and Rask both added goals.
Stempniak and Rask picked up their goals on the power play. Forward Sebastian Aho, making his NHL debut, earned his first NHL point with an assist on Rask's goal.
The Jets, with Paul Maurice coaching his 200th game with Winnipeg, led 1-0 in the first when Shawn Matthias whipped in a wicked shot from the corner that goalie Cam Ward couldn't stop. But Skinner tied the score 1-1, and goals by Stemniak and Staal in the second pushed the lead to 3-1.
The Canes used some active penalty killing to gain momentum in the first. Aho was called for a tripping penalty and then Staal for hooking. The Jets had 1:49 of a 5-on-3 power play but couldn't add to their 1-0 lead.
Skinner scored off a nice setup pass from Stempniak, knocking in his own rebound to beat Jets goalie Connor Hellebuyck.
The Canes had another two key penalty kills in the second. They first erased the last 1:27 of an interference call on Ron Hainsey to begin the period, and later killed off a double-minor high-sticking call against Justin Faulk.
Stempniak gave the Canes a 2-1 lead with a power-play score, with Noah Hanifin and Skinner getting the assists. Staal made it 3-1 with 31 seconds left in the period on a quick-wrister from the left circle.
Ward faced just 13 shots in the first two periods as the Canes limited the Jets' scoring chances and were effective clearing the defensive zone. The Jets, playing with more desperation, gave Ward a lot of work in the third.
Canes coach Bill Peters had defenseman Klas Dahlbeck in the lineup and playing with Hanifin. Dahlbeck was claimed off waivers from the Arizona Coyotes this week.
The Jets lost forward Bryan Little to a lower-body injury in the first.
The Canes next play the Vancouver Canucks on Sunday as they work their way through a six-game road trip to begin the season.
