Hurricane Lorenzo: Five things people must do before storm batters Ireland

Weather chiefs have confirmed that weather warnings will be issued due to the threat of Hurricane Lorenzo.

Met Eireann will be issuing the alerts on Wednesday morning as storm force winds get ready to batter Ireland.

A statement said: "There it a high probability that Storm Lorenzo will track close to or over Ireland later on Thursday and early Friday, giving high seas, severe winds and heavy rain.

"Warnings will be issued Wednesday morning."

The latest predicted path for Lorenzo, shows the eye of the storm passing the west coast of Ireland on Thursday.

It's believed Lorenzo, which will have lost its hurricane status by the time it hits, will cause strong winds from Wednesday night onwards.

However, gusts as strong as 115km/h may hit some parts of the country, while average wind speeds will be around 100km/h.

So before it hits we've put together five tips below to make sure you don't get caught out:

Here's five things you should do before Lorenzo rolls in:

  1. Bring in your pets: These horrible conditions are no weather for your beloved dog to be out in so make sure you bring them inside where they'll be warm and cosy as Lorenzo hits.

  2. Check on neighbours: If you have elderly neighbours or neighbours who may not get out and about as much, make sure to check in that they don't need any food or supplies when the bad weather kicks in.

  3. Check your travel plans: If you had intended being out on Wednesday, advice from the Road Safety Authority is to check local forecasts and traffic updates and not to avoid making a journey in extreme weather conditions if possible.

  4. Have useful numbers to hand: There's the obvious emergency telephone numbers that we all know - but it's no harm to check your local council's relevant contact details and utility companies like ESB just in case.

  5. Get your hands on some sandbags: If you are in an area that is particularly badly affected, you may have some sandbags in storage or be able to get a hold of some this evening to be prepared.
