Hurricane Irma forces UCF, Georgia Tech officials to cancel game

Hurricane Irma forced UCF and Georgia Tech officials to cancel their game scheduled for Saturday.

No word if the game will be rescheduled, but both teams do not have a similar bye week.

The national guard is using UCF's Spectrum Stadium as a staging area and the inability to gather Knights for meaningful practice after some players were released to be with their families limited the team's ability to host a game.

Several hundred members of the national guard were expected to be on campus beginning Monday.

"We're honored to host the National Guard and play a part in helping our community and state recover from Irma," said Vice President and Director of Athletics Danny White. "On behalf of our student-athletes, athletics staff and fans, I promise the Knights will do everything we can to assist in recovery efforts."

"We are in complete agreement with the decision," said Georgia Tech director of athletics Todd Stansbury. "While we're disappointed for both teams' student-athletes, coaches and fans, recovering from the effects of Hurricane Irma should be and is the top priority for UCF and the entire state of Florida at this time. We wish them the very best in their recovery efforts and look forward to meeting on the gridiron down the road."

UCF won't reopen for students earlier than Thursday and with many of the athletes away from campus to be with their families it would have been difficult to reconvene in time to prepare for the game.

This is the second consecutive game for UCF that has been canceled by the impact of Hurricane Irma. The Knights were supposed to host Memphis last Friday, but the game was called off as the area prepared for the arrival of the storm.
