Hurricane Ida victim ‘killed by alligator’ as he waded through flood waters

The death toll from Hurricane Ida rose on Tuesday as it emerged Louisiana residents could spend weeks without power.

The New Orleans mayor said the official number of deaths from the storm had risen to two after a driver drowned in their vehicle.

Separate to the official toll, a man, 71, was also reportedly killed after an alligator bit off his arm as he waded through flood waters.

Energy suppliers are working to restore more than 2,000 miles of downed energy lines across the state.

Rescuers in boats brought hundreds trapped by floodwaters to safety.

Violent wind pushed so much water into the mouth of the Mississippi that it reversed the flow of the mighty river and blacked out New Orleans.

The hurricane blew ashore on the 16th anniversary of Katrina, leading to an uneasy night of pouring rain and howling wind.

Hundreds of homes were threatened by the flooding which caused a surge in the maze of rivers and bayous south of New Orleans.

Forecasters said flash flooding and mudslides are possible along Ida‘s path before it blows out to sea over New England on Friday.
