Hurricane Dorian updates: Will storm impact Chiefs-Jaguars Week 1 game?

Hurricane Dorian has made landfall in the northwestern Bahamas as an extremely dangerous Category 5 storm.

It’s currently headed on a collision course for the east coast of Florida, moving up into Georgia and the Carolinas. With massive storm surges and wind gusts reported up 180 mph, this storm is not to be taken lightly.

How will the storm impact the opening week of the NFL season with Chiefs set to face the Jaguars in Jacksonville, on the eastern coast of Florida? So far it doesn’t appear that it will, but that can all change very quickly, so this is something worth monitoring.

As of Aug. 29, there had been no talks of moving the game, according to the Kansas City Star’s Sam Mellinger.

All NFL teams have contingency plans when the team is set to travel on the road. They are required by the NFL to keep their home stadiums unoccupied in the event the game needs to be moved. This happened to the Chiefs and Rams last season when the league had to move their game back to the Los Angeles Coliseum because of poor field conditions in Mexico City.

From the National Weather Service today: “Life-threatening storm surge and dangerous hurricane-force winds are possible along portions of the Florida east coast through mid-week …”

Heavy rains capable of flash flooding are also expected along eastern Florida through late in the week. Current projections have the storm veering away from the coast of Florida as it approaches Jacksonville. It would also scale down to a Category 3.

We’ll update this post with new information on the storm as it becomes available.
