The most powerful storm to hit the Caribbean islands of the Bahamas since records began has claimed the life of an eight-year-old boy.

Hurricane Dorian struck the northern Bahamas as a "catastrophic" category five storm with record 185mph winds. Lachino Mcintosh drowned on Monday as his family tried to flee their home.

The storm is on track to hit the US with one million people ordered to evacuate coastal areas in two states.

As of early Monday, the hurricane's westward movement to the north-east parallel to the US Southeast seaboard had slowed to 5mph.
