Hurlford United warm up for West of Scotland League big kick-off with five-star show

Darren Henderson enjoyed Hurlford United's five-star show at Ladywell Stadium yesterday – now he wants his sharp-shooters to land some crucial early-season blows.

In their final friendly ahead of the big kick-off, the Blair Park side took the lead through Chris McKnight before Jordan Banks levelled for Maybole, only for Graham Muir to restore Hurlford's advantage.

Alex Bell made it 3-1 midway through the second half with Liam Miller bagging a brace either side of Jai Holland's impressive turn and finish.

Hurlford begin their West of Scotland League Premier Division adventure at home to Kilbirnie Ladeside next Saturday.

Boss Henderson told Ayrshire Live: "It's always good to get five goals away from home but I'm not so pleased with the two that we lost.

"There is still a lot of progress to be had yet from the boys. We've got a few new ones in and there are players getting to grips with fitness. It's pre-season and you can't ask for too much.

"We will go into the game against Kilbirnie on the back of two wins which is pleasing. We're always ready for it.

"It's going to be a tough season but it will be important to get off to a good start. Getting a few points on the board early doors will take a bit of the pressure off."

This was always going to be a difficult afternoon for Maybole who launch their bid for promotion from Conference A at Lesmahagow next weekend.

Manager Carlo Walker said: "We won't play against that level of opposition and they've been at the top for a long, long time. There was lots of bits I was happy about, I'm still optimistic and we're still on track."
