Hurlford United donate cash to Ardeer Thistle who had their ground set on fire by heartless vandals

Hurlford United have selflessly chipped in to help League Two strugglers Ardeer who saw their ground set on fire last week.

Heartless vandals targeted the ground in Stevenston, and Premiership leaders Hurlford donated a cheque to the North Ayrshire side.

The Blair Park side decided to donate whatever was raised from the pre-match raffle from the Pollok game on Saturday - which amounted to £164.

Ford chairman John Sibbald said: "This has happened to them a number of times before, it's not good.

"We remember we were down on our backsides and we were bottom of the old Ayrshire District League, you couldn't get any lower than that.

"So we knew exactly how they feel, every penny counts. If that had happened to us when we were down there, Hurlford would have went out the game.

Ardeer Thistle's ground set on fire by heartless vandals

"We had a fire a couple of years ago, but luckily it was only a very small fire.

"When you see a club like Ardeer who have very small support, you need to admire the committee for keeping the club going.

"The hospitality suite that was set on fire was one of the main sources of income.

"It's crucial that these teams survive, but Junior football is about helping each other.

"Yes there's rivalries and what not, but we are there for everyone and we don't want to see anyone going out the game."

A number of junior clubs have banded in to help Ardeer with many donating to them. Johnstone Burgh will host them in a friendly this Saturday with all gate receipts heading to the North Ayrshire club.
