Hurlers from the capital can express themselves as well as anyone, says Mattie Kenny

Talk of Dublin having ‘manufactured hurlers’ has been rubbished by Mattie Kenny.

Kenny’s tactics were criticised after the League semi-final loss to Limerick, when he used Sean Moran as a sweeper, but he says hurlers from the capital can express themselves as well as anyone.

“Any interviews I’ve given in the past with Cuala, I always talked about the standard of the Dublin championship,” the 55-year-old said.

“And that’s something I repeated over a three-year period – the senior hurling championship in Dublin is a very competitive championship. There are a lot of very strong clubs in Dublin, and the standard is very high.

“From the success Cuala had, to navigate our way through the Dublin championship was one of the most difficult things we had to do.

“And once we got out of Dublin and went on the road in Leinster, that gave the lads a chance to express themselves more, and ultimately in the All-Ireland series and All-Ireland final.”

Will immortality beckon for Dublin, or will another Seamus Darby step up?
