Hunter TAFE loses nine jobs

NINE HUNTER TAFE staff will lose their jobs as part of 196 positions being cut across NSW.

Shadow Minister Rural and Regional Jobs and Swansea MP Yasmin Catley and Newcastle MP Tim Crakanthorp said Newcastle campus will lose six positions and Tighes Hill campus will lose three on December 20.

The Newcastle Herald understands the 196 comprises 91 TAFE NSW staff - eligible to accept a voluntary redundancy between December and mid-January - and 105 contractors.

A spokesperson for TAFE NSW said it was "prioritising resources for frontline teaching by reducing duplication and corporate/back office inefficiencies".

They said TAFE NSW was "looking at the mix of contractors, consultants and employees so we can deliver the level of support our students need, while being prudent with our expenditure of taxpayer money".

Mr Crakanthorp said the government had over eight years slashed 6000 jobs and seen enrolments decline by more than 175,000.

"This is death by 1000 cuts.

"The way the hardworking staff are being treated is disgusting."
