Hunter surf lifesaver receives nod in state-wide women's awards

NOMINATED: Sarah Bugbird

A Hamilton South woman has been acknowledged for her outstanding commitment to surf lifesaving with a nomination in a major state award.

Sarah Bugbird has been named as one of 24 finalists in the NSW 2020 Inspirational Women's Awards. Ms Bugbird is one of four finalists in the young urban category.

After starting surf lifesaving as a nipper at Merewether 19 years ago, Ms Bugbird has had huge involvement in the organisation.

She has held committee and executive positions at club and branch level, has served as area manager for the Junior Development Program for Merewether SLSC and organised community events such as fun days.

Ms Bugbird has also been a trainer at Merewether Education Team and Hunter Training branch and volunteered for a week-long Beach to Bush program, which has extended knowledge of surf and water safety to more than 2500 students in rural areas.

Ms Bugbird said she loved the community aspect of surf lifesaving.

"I gain a lot of satisfaction from teaching and educating youth," she said.

The 25-year-old said it was a huge honour to be nominated for the Inspirational Women's Award.

"It's incredibly unexpected and very humbling," she said.

NSW Minister for Mental Health, Regional Youth and Women Bronnie Taylor said the awards were a fantastic opportunity to shine a light upon the enormous contribution of women in both urban and rural communities across NSW.

"These awards celebrate the outstanding commitment, energy and sacrifice of these incredible people who give so much of themselves and ask for nothing in return," Ms Taylor said.

The awards are presented by Rotary Clubs of NSW and the committee is currently organising a virtual awards ceremony to be held on November 15.
