HUNTER Catholic school students across the diocese are painting bright and colourful rainbows in a show of support to children in Northern Italy and to spread hope and positivity in the face of the COVID-19 crisis.
Catholic Schools Office education officer Kim Moroney wrote to primary principals last Thursday to explain that children living in the town of Reggio Emilia were using drawings to convey the message that the virus would be defeated, that "everything will be fine - the rainbow will win".
Principal of St Patrick's Primary Swansea, Peter Green, said there was a need to balance "negative messages... in regard to what the future holds for us". "I think the rainbows balance that message and they are a symbol of hope," he said.
Year two teacher Louise Stewart said she wanted to ease the children's minds and let them know they were not alone.
"I wanted to let them know children all over the world are having similar sorts of feelings and we're all in this together. In the end everything will be okay." She said the students loved art and expressing themselves.
