Hunter SES teams to support western units ahead of possible severe storm

The Newcastle and Hunter region can expect further rainfall on Thursday and into the weekend, according to the Bureau of Meteorology.

Deputy zone commander for the Hunter NSW State Emergency Service Peter Green said some volunteers from the coast were making their way west to strengthen emergency service efforts in Central Western NSW.

While the forecast wasn't indicating a significant weather event for the Hunter, Mr Green said sufficient volunteer numbers would remain in the area to prepare for any potential calls for assistance.

"The longer term forecast is showing a slow moving body of water coming from the Northern Territory," he said.

"That is going to impact the western zone, so we'll be providing some support.

"Because it's a slow moving body of water it gives people more time to be prepared."

Mr Green said the NSW SES was gathering resources to ensure they could support people who could be isolated for some time due to rising water.

Meanwhile, the rain expected for Newcastle and the Hunter is less likely to cause severe damage.

That is going to impact the western zone, so we'll be providing some support.

On Wednesday, 8.6mm of rain was recorded at Nobbys, 8mm at Newcastle University, 2.5mm at Maitland's Belmore Bridge, and 3.5mm at Scone.

Newcastle residents can expect rain throughout Thursday and 15 to 25 km/hr winds.

Swimmers and surfers are reminded that ocean conditions can be more powerful than they appear and rock fishing and other coastal activities could be hazardous during rough weather.

There is also a high chance of rain in Maitland and a chance of thunderstorm across the Upper Hunter on Thursday.
