Hunter schools to close on Tuesday in face of bushfire risk

UPDATED 7.30PM, MONDAY

PARENTS have been urged to check the Department of Education's School Safety page to see if their child's school will be closed on Tuesday.

The page is being updated regularly and lists closures for both government and non-government schools.

Parents have also been asked to keep in contact with their own school via their school's website, Facebook page and SkoolBag app for up-to-the-minute information.

Mount Hutton Public principal Kirstie Yeo posted on her school's Facebook page on Monday that the school had been identified as a school "at increased risk if a bush fire were to break out on a day when a Catastrophic Fire Danger Rating is issued for our area".

"To ensure the safety of students and staff, a decision has been made that our school WILL NOT be operating on Tuesday 12 November 2019," she wrote.

"OOSH WILL NOT be operating on Tuesday 12 November 2019 at Mount Hutton Public School.

"There will be no staff on site tomorrow. Please ensure that you put supervision arrangements in place for your child tomorrow. Please continue to refer to our Facebook page for up to date information."

Medowie Christian School principal Simon Herd has also told parents via his school's Facebook page it would be closed on Tuesday.

"Please be aware that no Before or After School Care will be operating and no Medowie Christian School staff will be onsite tomorrow 12 November 2019," he wrote.

"Please ensure that all students remain in a safe location under the care of a responsible adult.

"At this stage school will operate as normal on Wednesday 13 November 2019. Should circumstances change we will notify parents via email and Facebook.

"We continue to pray for those already impacted along with the emergency services in their courageous support of the community."

Meanwhile Glendale Technology High principal Anthony Angel wrote to parents asking them to ensure family contact details are up to date and that students bring a full water bottle to school and a puffer if needed.

"This decision was made in consideration of local advice, the schools RFS Fire zone rating and the catastrophic fire warning issued for Tuesday 12 November," Mr Mowbray said.

"In this instance, students are not to attend school.

"This advice will be updated daily while conditions remain volatile.

"Safety is our priority.

"Our thoughts and prayers are with our local communities who have been deeply affected by the devastation of these bushfires."

CatholicCare Social Services Hunter Manning's Taree and Gloucester Offices will be closed Monday and Tuesday. Their phones will be diverted to the Newcastle office so they can provide support and assistance to anyone affected by the bushfires.

"Supports include confidential counselling, emergency relief for food and supplies, support to find emergency and alternative accommodation, advocacy and referral to supports, financial assistance for emergency accommodation and supplies," a spokesperson said.

"For all enquires and requests for support or assistance please contact our Mayfield office on 4979 1120."

The Association of Independent School NSW said it would close 115 schools, which will affect 36,000 students.
