Hunter man pleads guilty to grooming child for sex over internet

A Hunter man will be sentenced next year for grooming someone he believed to be a child over the internet for sex and sending "indecent material".

Timothy George Kemp faced Newcastle Local Court on Wednesday where he pleaded guilty to one count each of using a carriage service to procure a person under the age of 16 for a sexual activity and using a carriage service to send indecent material to a person.

The now-36-year-old was in contact with undercover police between March and May this year, with court documents saying the Maitland man believed he was communicating with a 13-year-old.

Detectives from the State Crime Command's Child Abuse and Sex Crimes Squad arrested and charged Kemp in May, as part of an operation by Strike Force Trawler - the specialist team targeting the alleged sexual abuse and exploitation of children over the internet.

Magistrate Robert Stone on Wednesday continued Kemp's bail.

He will be committed for sentencing on February 11.
