CARDIFF South's Raymond Steadman has received statewide recognition for his work as an early childhood education trainee, winning the People's Choice Award for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Student of the Year at the 2020 NSW Training Awards.
Parliamentary Secretary for the Hunter Catherine Cusack congratulated Mr Steadman.
"As a childhood educator at Awabakal Preschool, Raymond feels privileged to help children discover their potential," Ms Cusack said.
"When Raymond started his traineeship he lacked confidence, but his mentors Auntie Karen and Jen encouraged him to speak up and have faith in his ideas.
"Raymond's trainers noted his quietly respectful interactions with children and his well-tuned observational skills that allow him to notice traits in children's behaviour that others miss."
She said Mr Steadman was doing further Aboriginal health studies so he can identify issues early and help families seek treatment.
He said children are the future and need the best possible start in life.
