A THICK coat of fog across the Hunter delayed several flights on Friday, but the mist is unlikely to hamper high temperatures.

The Bureau of Meteorology predicts winds and a late cool change in Newcastle on Friday after maximum temperatures hit 30 degrees.

It's a 10-degree drop on Saturday, with winds to persist as the top temperature dips back to 20 degrees.

Winds will abate on Sunday, the Bureau expects, but temperatures will linger in the low 20s for the city before dipping into the teens on Monday and Tuesday.

Similar conditions are expected in Maitland and Cessnock, both expected to hit 32 degrees on Friday, while minimum temperatures are unlikely to climb out of single digits next week in Muswellbrook, Singleton and Scone.

Sunshine and warmer days are expected to return midway through next week.
