Hunter dies after being savaged by deer he thought he had shot dead

A hunter has died after he was attacked by a deer he thought he had shot dead.

The man, named by media in the US as Thomas Alexander, is believed to have shot the buck with a muzzleloader in Yellville, Arkansas.

However when the 66-year-old went to check if it was dead the deer is believed to have gored, Sky News reports.

A spokesman for the Arkansas game and fish commission told reporters Mr Alexander had "several puncture wounds" to his body.

Keith Stephens, the commission's chief of communications, told local TV station KY3: "I've worked for the game and fish commission for 20 years, and it's one of the stranger things that's happened.

"I don't know how long he left it there, but he went up to check it to make sure it was dead - and evidently it wasn't.

"It got back up, and he had several puncture wounds on his body."

According to CNN, Mr Alexander was alert when he was found by his nephew and managed to call his wife.

He later died in hospital but officials are unsure if he was killed by the puncture wounds.

Mr Stephens said: "It's my understanding there's not going to be an autopsy, so we may never know what actually happened."

Officials said a similar incident happened four years ago when a buck's antlers struck someone in Arkansas but the person survived.
