Hunter craft beer outfit Rogue Scholar plans city brewery-bar

Early days: Some of the set-up taking place at the Union Street bar, expected to open in the coming months.

Craft beer makers from the Hunter, Rogue Scholar Brewing, will open a bar in Newcastle West in the coming months.

Brewer Adam Hardy and his crew are "a fair way into" the licensing process and are fitting out a premises on Union Street, between Hunter and King streets, in the hope they can open its doors to the public by April.

Mr Hardy said the plan was to brew all the bar's beer on-site, which would be served across 12 taps and at least four hand pumps.

He said the front bar would have the feel of an English pub - 1950s bus seats had been sourced for the booths - while the rear would be an area for live music, a pool table and pinball machines.

"I've been in Newcastle all my life," he said. "I'm passionate about music and now I'm brewing, I thought why not combine those things."

It comes amid a growing number of individual brewery-style venues in the Hunter, with 4 Pines opening a bar at Charlestown late last year and plans for Modus Operandi to move into a premises at Merewether.
