Two men are back in police custody after they escaped a watch house in Mount Isa on Sunday.

Police allege that, at about 12:30pm on Sunday, a 19-year-old Sunset man and a 25-year-old Mount Isa man used an implement to smash a large plate-glass window in the exercise area of the city's watch house.

The two men escaped on foot sparking a large-scale air and land search.

"Police responded in under a minute, however the men were able to run away," Inspector Shawcross said Mount Isa Police District officer in charge Inspector Erin Shawcross.

"We deployed separate teams and searched a number of residences and utilised the LifeFlight helicopter.

The 19-year-old was found in Mount Isa on Monday morning and charged with one count of escaping lawful custody and one count of wilful damage.

The 25-year-old was located in Mount Isa on Monday night and was charged with one count of escaping lawful custody and two counts of wilful damage.

Both men will appear at the Mount Isa Magistrates Court today.

The police Ethical Standards Command was notified of the escape and an internal investigation was launched into how the men broke out of the facility.
