Hunt for thugs who ripped engagement ring from finger of petrified widow

Police are hunting robbers who left a 92-year-old widow in agony after trying to rip her engagement ring off during a terrifying burglary.

Shocking photos show the bruised and bloodied hand of the pensioner after the trio of yobs struck at her Coventry home on Wednesday.

They used a crowbar to break into her home in broad daylight and tried to prise the diamond ring - given by her late husband - from her finger.

The vile gang eventually fled with more than £1,000 in cash which she had been saving up to buy a new three-piece suite.

West Midlands Police has now launched an appeal to track down the callous crooks, who were white and in their 30s.

Detectives are trawling CCTV and conducting local enquiries as part of their search for the men.

Detective Constable Surinder Dadry said: “It’s hard to imagine how anyone could sink so low as to assault an elderly woman and forcibly try to rip a piece of sentimental jewellery from their finger.

“The victim's daughter left the house just minutes before so we're looking into whether the offenders had been watching the address.

“It was a brazen offence, the men having prised open the front door in the middle of the afternoon.”
