Hunt for killer joyrider continues a year after tragic fireball death of Jonny Smith in Edinburgh

The family of a 29-year-old Scot robbed of his life by a callous joyrider are still waiting for justice a year after the tragedy.

Jonny Smith died in a fireball crash after a yob driving a stolen Audi on the wrong side of the road forced another driver to swerve and plough into the car he was in.

Twelve months later, police say they are still working “to establish the full circumstances of the collision”. They insist they are determined to hold the joyrider to account.

Jonny, a groundworker, was only a few minutes from his home when he was killed on Maybury Road in Edinburgh on May 25 last year.

He was found dead inside the Peugeot 206 he had been travelling in, after the car went up in flames.

The people in the Audi A3, which had been stolen a month earlier in the Liberton area of the capital, ran away before police arrived. Hours after the crash, the car was found dumped in Cowdenbeath, Fife.

Detective Inspector Graham Grant, the senior investigating officer, said: “We are committed to seeking justice for the family and friends of Jonathan Smith and our thoughts continue to be with them at this time.

“This is a complex investigation that is very much ongoing to establish the full circumstances of the collision. We continue to liaise with Jonathan’s family to keep them informed of progress.”

Jonny's family and friends have built a shrine to him near the crash site and are campaigning for improved safety measures on the road.

His mother, Ellen McDaid, has said: “You can never feel a better love than when your children are born.

“I will never rest until I see the people who did this to  Jonathan punished.”
