Hunt for driver after female pedestrian killed in hit-and-run near hospital

A 53-year-old woman has died after she was struck by a car in a horror hit-and-run outside a hospital.

Police were called to the scene outside the Royal Albert Edward Infirmary in Wigan, Greater Manchester, just before 9pm on Saturday.

Paramedics and doctors tried to save the woman, but she was pronounced dead at the scene.

Officers are now hunting the driver and the car, which was described as a dark in colour, the Manchester Evening News reports.

No-one has been arrested and police are appealing for information from the public as they look for a suspect.

A Greater Manchester Police spokesperson said: "A woman has died following a collision in Wigan last night.

"Shortly before 8.50pm, police were called to reports that a car had collided with a pedestrian outside the Royal Albert Infirmary on Wigan Lane.

"The pedestrian – a 53 year old woman – sadly died at the scene despite the best efforts of paramedics and doctors.

"The car – which has been described as a dark coloured vehicle – failed to stop at the scene and enquiries are ongoing to trace the car and the driver.

"No arrests have been made."

Sgt Andrew Page, of the Greater Manchester Police Serious Collision Investigation Unit, has urged people to come forward if they have information.

He said: "A woman has tragically lost her life and we are doing all we can to support her family who are understandably devastated by what happened.

"The vehicle failed to stop at the scene and had left the immediate area prior to police arrival but we’re doing all we can trace the person responsible for this awful incident.

"If you have any information or saw anyone acting suspiciously in the local area last night, please get in touch as soon as possible so we can provide the woman’s family with the answers they deserve."
