Truckie arrested over cyclist hit-and-run in SA's Coorong region

Police at the scene of the crash on the Coorong, near Kingston SE.

A truck driver has been arrested over the fatal hit-and-run of a cyclist in South Australia's Coorong region.

The Mount Gambier man, 37, was allegedly behind the wheel when a 60-year-old Victorian cyclist was hit on the Princes Highway, between Kingston SE and Salt Creek, at about 7:45am on Thursday.

He was arrested in Naracoorte, in the state's south-east, about nine hours later.

The truck driver has been charged with causing death by dangerous driving, two counts of driving without due care and leaving the scene of an accident.

He was refused police bail and will appear in the Mt Gambier Magistrates Court later today.

It is understood the cyclist was travelling with a friend to Adelaide for the Tour Down Under.

His friend was some distance up the road at the time of the crash and did not realise an accident had occurred.

The man's riding partner spoke to police at the scene, but he was unable to provide a description of the vehicle.

A passing motorist found the injured cyclist on the side of the road, raising the alarm. But despite the efforts of paramedics, the man died at the scene.

South Australia Police spent yesterday inspecting vehicles in the area for front-end damage.

The man's death brings the state's road toll to seven, compared to five at the same time last year.

The victim is the second Victorian cyclist to be struck in a hit-run accident since the Tour Down Under began last week.

A man faced court on Wednesday over a crash at Bridgewater in the Adelaide Hills which seriously hurt a cyclist on Sunday.

Anyone with further information that may be able to help the investigation is asked to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
