Hunt for artist behind 'hidden treasures' discovered at auction

A woman found hidden treasures at an auction while searching for art to decorate a new coffee shop.

Michelle Langan, 48, successfully bid £25 pound for the pack of sketches from the 1950s at a recent auction to add some colour to the shop which is being launched by homeless charity, The Paper Cup Project.

And now Michelle is looking for the artist who drew them.

The charity CEO from Wavertree suspects Avril Heller, the person who signed their name on the drawings, was an art student in Liverpool. Michelle hopes she is still living here somewhere.

Michelle told the ECHO : "It's a weird feeling because it's a part of history because they're from the 1950s. They're part of someone's life that's been important to them at one point.

"I think it's really interesting how that part of someone's life has now ended with a total stranger. Someone who's totally unrelated to that person now has all these all these pieces of work."

In the stash, or 'portfolio' as Michelle calls it, are life and fashion drawings, paintings of block letters, and sketches of pots and of kids playing football.

This 'snapshot' into Avril's life made Michelle eager to know more about who she was and what she went on to do.

Michelle Langan runs The Paper Cup Project which works to support homeless people and rough sleepers in Liverpool (Liverpool Echo)

She told the ECHO : "I even looked on social media to see if I could find the name and there was nothing, but I suppose, you know, people get married and things and change their names."

Michelle is planning to open The Paper Cup Projects' coffee shop at Queens Square in Liverpool city centre in September.

The café will help homeless people back into employment, offering them training and a chance to build confidence and social skills.

Michelle is hoping Avril Heller will be a guest of honour when the shop does open.

She told the ECHO : "It'd be really good if we could maybe find out who she is, and if she's still around, to get her to come into the shop when we open so she can see some of the pictures up on the wall."
