The public has been warned not to approach Brendan Searle. (AAP)

An suspect remains on the run a day after a shot was allegedly fired at police in suburban Melbourne.

Victoria Police are calling for public assistance to find Brendan Searle, who they say is approximately 183cm tall, muscular and has a shaved head.

He also has tattoos across the right side of his forehead, as well as others on this face, neck, arms and legs.

Police say officers were shot at in Boronia, east of the city's CBD, just after 2am on Saturday.

Along with members of the force's Special Operations Group they were doorknocking homes in the area.

Detectives are calling on Searle to come forward and make contact with police.

"Anyone who sights him is asked not to approach him as he's believed to be armed, and to contact triple zero immediately," Victoria Police said in a statement.

"Police have warned members of the public not to approach because he may be armed."

Anyone with information about his whereabouts is urged to contact Crime Stoppers.
