Hunslet pub that has stood derelict for years finally demolished

Demolition work at a Hunslet pub that has been vacant for nearly three years finally began on Sunday.

The George IV pub on Grove Road was initially ordered to close by Leeds City Council back in July 2017, when the pub's licence was suspended after weapons and drugs were found on the premises.

Three months after this, just before the pub was scheduled to re-open, it was badly damaged by a fire, with the pub standing derelict ever since.

Earlier in 2020, Leeds City Council announced that they would be finally demolishing the pub as the land had been allocated as the site for new council housing.

The land was already owned by the council, who paid £270,000 to buy out the leasehold interest and demolish the building.

Leeds City Council is still aiming to begin redevelopment work on the site before the end of the year.
