'Hungry' England 'want to make history' in Euro 2024, says captain Harry Kane

NEW DELHI: In an interview with German magazine Spiegel, England captain Harry Kane expressed confidence in the team's ability to secure their first major men's trophy since the 1966 World Cup at the upcoming Euro 2024.

The striker, who recently moved to Bayern Munich, believes England has a strong chance of winning the tournament, stating, "I'm not saying we'll definitely win the tournament, but we have a really good chance."

Kane acknowledged England's past struggles in major tournaments, particularly the heartbreaking penalty shootout loss to Italy in the Euro 2020 final at Wembley.

However, he emphasized the team's hunger and determination to make history by winning the title. "In England's history we've struggled to get across the finish line at major tournaments," AFP quoted Kane as saying in the interview.

The England captain also touched on his personal ambitions, noting that winning the Euros would be a significant achievement in his career, especially considering the doubts that have accompanied him.

Kane, who is England's all-time top goalscorer, also expressed his desire to make amends for missing a crucial penalty in the 2022 World Cup quarter-final loss to France. "It still hurts and I know that pain will probably never go away," added Kane.

During the tournament, England will be based at a resort near the central German village of Blankenhain, which features three golf courses.

Kane, an enthusiastic golfer who has played regularly with Germany veteran Thomas Mueller since his move to Munich, expressed his frustration with the limited time he has to perfect his golfing skills.

"That's what frustrates me about golf. I don't have the time it takes to really perfect it," he said.
