Hungry driver caught four times the drink drive limit when stopping at McDonald's

A hungry motorist was four times the legal drink drive limit when he stopped off at a fast food chain.

Kevin Steele, 28, of Westwood Crescent, Ayr, appeared at Ayr Sheriff Court last week and admitted driving with 88 microgrammes of alcohol in 100 millilitres of breath. The limit is 22.

The offence happened at McDonald’s in Whitletts Road, Ayr, on April 14.

And there was a small child in the footwell of Steele’s two-seater van, the court was told.

Fiscal depute Ed Sheeran said police attended McDonald’s on an unrelated matter at 11.30pm and were told Steele was under the influence of alcohol.

Steele’s defence solicitor Glenn Davis said: “The mother of the child was in the passenger seat of the car and the child in the footwell as the car was a two-seater van.

"They had been at a friend’s house and he was clearly not in a position to be driving.

“He recognises that alcohol is something that requires to be addressed by him. He’s thinking of joining the army but that’s quite far down the line.”

Sheriff John Montgomery said it was “very reckless” to drive with a small child in the footwell.

He banned Steele from driving for three-and-a-half years, ordered him to do 180 hours of unpaid work and put him under supervision for a year. Steele must also attend alcohol counselling.
