
Shishamo smelt are hung out to dry in Mukawa, Hokkaido, a town facing the Pacific Ocean. At the long-established shishamo specialty shop Kanedai Ono Shoten, people stopped by to purchase the fish in batches of 10 skewered with reed stalks. Despite a poor catch resulting from bad weather such as Typhoon No. 19, the fish are big. The fishing season will finish on Nov. 10, but shishamo drying can be seen until late November.
