Hundreds turn out to say goodbye to 'fearless and funny' RTE broadcaster Keelin Shanley

Much loved RTE broadcaster Keelin Shanley told her family: "I had a wonderful life."

Hundreds of mourners packed into St Paul's church in Glenageary for her funeral today heard how she bravely battled cancer to the end.

The congregation including President Michael D. HIGGINS and Taioiseach Leo Varadkar were told the RTE Six One news anchor was "fearless and funny.

She had been hoping to get on a cancer treatment trial in Washington when her illness finally caught up with her.

Family and friends heard how she faced the end with gratitude for a full life and her trademark mischievous humour.

Husband Conor told those at the humanist ceremony: "she said 'after Gaybo,Marian and Larry Gogan, sure no one will give a crap when it's my time'."

He said she would have been overwhelmed by the outpouring of love and respect in what he said people responded to "like a national tragedy."

A video link had to be set up in the parish centre for the large crowd who turned out to pat tribute.

They came to mourn with Keelin's heartbroken husband Conor and children Lucy and Ben.

The service was a laughter filled celebration of the late RTE Six One news anchor's life and brilliant career.

A me memorial pamphlet read: "Cailfhionn (Keelin) Shanley. Journalist. Mother. Wife. Daughter. Sister.

"A celebration of a Full Life"

A family statement sdded: "thanks everyone for all the love, support and kindness over the past few years and throughout her life. It meant so much to Keelin and to us too." Conor, Lucy, Ben and the Shanley family."

The mum-of-two passed away peacefully on Saturday following a battle with cancer.

Ms Shanley had been presenting the flagship Six One News on RTE One with Caitriona Perry since January 2018.

She is survived by her husband Conor and two children.

A death notice on RIP.ie read: "Adored wife of Conor Ferguson and devoted mother to Lucy and Ben, after a courageous battle with cancer, fought with the ingenuity, love and care of Dr Janice Walshe and her amazing team at St Vincent’s Private University Hospital; also the fantastic people at Blackrock Hospice. Pre-deceased by her beloved mother Orna Shanley (née McMahon).
