Hundreds turn out for the Great British Dog Walk to raise money for charity

Hundreds of dogs and their owners descended on Raby Castle in County Durham for the popular charity event the Great British Dog Walk.

Over 300 people and 200 of their pooches attended the annual walk, which raises funds to help Hearing Dogs for Deaf People train more dogs.

The training allows dogs to alert deaf people to important and life-saving sounds while helping to tackle loneliness by providing constant emotional support and companionship.

It costs around £40,000 to fully train and support a hearing dog for the duration of its life but Hearing Dogs for Deaf People receives no central government funding.

The event, which was supported by Specsavers Audiologists, took place at Raby Castle and attracted hundreds of walkers this weekend on Sunday 15 March 2020.

Adorable photos from the event showed a variety of dogs from different walks of life.

Lucy Ward, Hearing Dogs Community Fundraising Manager for the region, said: “We were really impressed with how many people from County Durham and from further afield showed up to enjoy The Great British Dog Walk.

“Every walker will directly help us to train more dogs to change the lives of deaf people, so we greatly appreciate the support they showed us by coming along.

"We had people there with and without dogs and there was such a great community feel, with everyone coming together to walk for a good cause.

“We could not have made the walk so successful without the support of Specsavers Audiologists, so we are also incredibly grateful to them for recognising the important roles our dogs play in people’s lives.
