Hundreds to walk in memory of schoolgirl Abbie McLaren on anniversary of her death

Friends and family will gather tomorrow night and walk in memory of tragic Motherwell schoolgirl Abbie McLaren.

Wednesday will mark the first anniversary of the 12-year-old’s death after she was knocked over and killed at The Loaning, North Motherwell, on February 12, 2019.

Hundreds are expected to turn up and pay tribute to the popular Dalziel High School pupil.

They will gather at 7pm at the Loaning shops, opposite the spot where she was struck.

People have previously gathered to walk in solidarity to ask for safer roads.

A family member said: “We can’t quite believe that it has been a year since Abbie passed away.

“We think it is lovely that the local community are once again coming together to remember Abbie on the first anniversary of her death.”

In June last year Martin McGuire, the cousin of Abbie’s dad John, was sentenced to five years in jail for her death.

Maguire, 39, who was driving without a licence, struck Abbie as she crossed the road just seconds after getting off a bus.

The court heard that dad-of-seven McGuire drove at more than 50mph in a 30mph zone.

Tragically, Abbie’s dad John McLaren was sitting in the passenger seat of the car when it hit and killed the youngster.

It was announced late last year that a safety review into the Motherwell street was being carried out.

More than 12,000 people signed a petition demanding traffic control measures in the wake of Abbie’s death.
